I was watching part one of Glenys Garrett’s Typography series on Camversation tonight. I love her ideas and work.
Two things she talked about struck me, or was it three?
One
One, she mentioned that old cliche that photographer are said to have it easy compared to painters. They snap a picture then reduce it. Painters start with a blank page and the add to it. With my composite work in mind, I start with the simple image or scans of memories, then create meaningful images from them. Similarly with the cubist work. It isn’t reductionism, the meaning and emotion comes from the creation of the work.
Two
Two, she wants us to make an array of images of mundane objects, so that the array makes the objects tale on an importance. Shades of Perec!
Three
Three, I’ve forgotten, must watch it again, but I think it was that she made ICM and/or multiple exposures of the said mundane objects, and I’ve been doing exactly that this past week! I’ll post some later.
Another Thing – but does it fit?
Glenys was talking about carrying your camera with you everywhere and shooting the mundane. I carry one everywhere and have been doing that for 10-15 years or more, almost daily taking photos. (Perec again, with the everyday, but mine would be not as banal as some, being in the woods or on the beach. Does that disqualify them?) Should I post examples of these – a full journal? It’s bluebell season too.
