I thought I’d make a start on this idea, so I made (in Photoshop) a few backgrounds. Then made a distressed edge Did this with a couple of my thesis pages These are incomplete, but something to ponder and try again. I think I need more colour, they are a bit bland.

Altered book
Last night I was reading “The Found Object in Textile Art” by Cas Holmes and the section on ‘Altered Books’ (p.80-81) caught my eye. It suggested using a found book, or cheap substitute, and using as a base or substrate for a series of collages. This seemed like a great idea to me. When I… Continue reading Altered book
Pandora’s Box
I mentioned last Thursday that I had taken my ‘found object’, an old wallet, from a box found in the roof space. Beside it was a packet of negatives and one or two prints from the same period. BUT, there were other plastic bags inside this box, and I haven’t opened them, I was so… Continue reading Pandora’s Box
Father Time
I like to think I’m a smart cookie, but sometimes …. After the student presentations last night I was thinking about the possible themes I’ll be working on. All of them had some sort of relationship with time, and I’d said already that I’d been fascinated with the concepts of time from my early 20s.… Continue reading Father Time

More reading for the New Year! Keri Smith’s ‘Everything is Connected’ is a book of postcards (!) with suggestions or inspirations for practical art if you run out of ideas. Perec’s books are ‘Life, a user’s manual’ and ‘I remember’.

Perec is all around!
Is this spooky or what? I picked up a new book, I think it was recommended to me, Keri Smith’s “How to be an Explorer of the World”. Opened randomly at P.118 and read, ‘What we need to question is bricks, glass, our table manners, our utensils our tools, the way we spend our time,… Continue reading Perec is all around!
“Space melts like sand running through one’s fingers. Time bears it away and leaves me only shapeless shreds.” from Perec’s ‘Species of Spaces’
I’ve been slowly making my way through this book. which is really a collection of essays and articles, on various themes – the book title is ” Species of Spaces and other pieces”. I bought it last week and don’t intend now to read it all the way through, but just to dip in from… Continue reading “Space melts like sand running through one’s fingers.
