I’ve had a few problems accessing Spaces, but I’ve finally got in. I kept a notebook to record my thoughts, and these are some of the first impressions.
I’ve been offered a place on the MA Fine Arts course at the OCA, Open College of the Arts. I’m excited, but quite nervous. My background is in science, teaching and research, with very little, or even no arts included. I’ve always had an interest, but have never really acted on it, except for photography which I’ve been involved with for many years, and I’ve done some ceramics and fused glass work in the last 5 years.

I’m trying to come up with an MA FA project that will suit my talents (!) and experience, but will stretch me too. It should be based on photography, my strength, but I doubt if just pretty landscapes or fine art portraits/nudes would fit the bill.
SOME THEME IDEAS
- Expand some of my science areas, a) renewable energy, b) climate change and c) the environment. Use photography to go beyond documentation – documentation would be fine if the images were to to characterize a place over time, but the time scale of an MA project is too short.
- Photography plus another art form (ceramics, glass, writing). This could become a hybrid composite of photography of photography, watercolours, abstract, print, but I still nee a viable topic to represent.
- Some combination of landscapes/seascapes, dogs, living in the moment, anxiety, mental health, stress relief, wellness.
- Abstract photography/ multiple exposures/ composites/hybrid (with/without paining or drawing. Still needs a theme.
ADVICE
I hope I will be able to get advice from the staff on selecting a theme. I’ve no idea about what’s acceptable, which is quite ironic since I’ve been a tutor/supervisor and examiner of MSc students for several years.
It would be great too to find inspiration from my fellow students who may have more of an artistic background and/or experience. Is there space for collaboration?
